Who we are
Genie Menu runs geniemenu.co.uk and is responsible for the personal information described here, under UK data protection law (the UK GDPR and the Data Protection Act 2018). For anything about your data, email support@geniemenu.co.uk.
What we collect
- Your account: your name, email address and password. We never store the password itself, only a one-way scrambled version of it that can check a password but can't be turned back into one.
- Your household: the details in the next section.
- What you plan and buy: your meal plans and recipes, the ratings you give dinners, your shopping lists, what you tick off, items you add, and any list you choose to share by link.
- Your cupboard: the food you tell us you have in, typed or read from a photo (see below).
- Payments: Stripe takes your card details; we never see or store them. We keep the plan you're on, whether it's in its free week, active or ended, and Stripe's reference for you.
- Emails you send us, and our replies.
- Technical details: one cookie that keeps you signed in, and the address your device connects from (your IP address). We use the IP address briefly to slow down anyone making repeated sign-in attempts, and our hosting provider keeps it in short-lived security logs.
Your household details
How we collect them. You tell us, in the questions when you start and later on your Family page: how many adults and children are eating, the names you choose to give them, diets and allergies, foods to avoid or that someone likes, the kitchen appliances you have, your weekly budget, your supermarket, your postcode if you give it, how many dinners you want and how often a favourite should come back.
How we use them. Only to plan your dinners and shopping: to size the portions, keep foods your family avoids out of every recipe, cook with the appliances you have, stay near your budget and price the list at your supermarket. To write each week's recipes we send OpenAI the household details the recipes depend on: the number of adults and children, diets, foods to avoid, and what each named person likes. We don't send your email address or your postcode.
Sensitive details. Allergies and some diets (halal or kosher, for example) can say something about health or religion. We only use them because you choose to give them, to keep unsuitable food out of your plans. You can change or remove them on your Family page at any time.
How we store them. In our database, hosted by Supabase in the EU (Frankfurt). Everything travels encrypted between your device, our servers and the database, and only the people who run Genie Menu can reach it.
Cupboard photos
With Pro, you can photograph your cupboard, fridge or freezer so we can list what's in it. The photo is shrunk on your device, sent to our server, and passed to OpenAI to read the food items. We keep the list of items it finds, which you can edit or clear on your Cupboard page. We don't save the photo: it isn't stored in our database or file storage.
OpenAI handles the photo under its business terms for its API: it doesn't use it to train its models, and may keep it for up to 30 days to check for abuse before deleting it. Please keep people, documents and anything else private out of the frame.
Why we're allowed to use it
- To provide the service you signed up for (a contract with you): your account, plans, lists, cupboard, emails about your plans, and billing.
- With your consent: allergies and diets that reveal health or religion. Remove them and we stop using them.
- Our legitimate interests: keeping accounts secure, stopping abuse, fixing problems and improving recipes from ratings.
- The law: keeping payment records for tax.
How long we keep it
We keep your account and household details for as long as your account is open, so your plans and preferences are there when you come back. Ask us to delete your account and we'll delete it, with your household, plans, lists and cupboard, within 30 days. We keep payment records for six years, because tax law requires it.
Your rights
You can ask for a copy of what we hold about you, ask us to correct it, delete it, limit how we use it or send it to you in a portable form, and object to how we use it. Where we rely on your consent, you can withdraw it at any time. Email support@geniemenu.co.uk and we'll reply within a month.
If you're unhappy with how we've handled your information, please tell us first. You can also complain to the Information Commissioner's Office at ico.org.uk.
Children
Genie Menu is for adults planning meals for their household; you must be 18 or over to have an account. Children's details come from their parent or carer, and you choose how much to give: a first name or a label like “Child 1” works just as well.
Changes to this policy
If we change how we use your information, we'll update this page and its date. If a change matters to you, we'll tell you by email before it takes effect.
